Sources: Sarkozy views Obama stance on Iran as 'utterly immature'

French President Nicolas Sarkozy is very critical of U.S. presidential candidate Barack Obama's positions on Iran, according to reports that have reached Israel's government.

Sarkozy has made his criticisms only in closed forums in France. But according to a senior Israeli government source, the reports reaching Israel indicate that Sarkozy views the Democratic candidate's stance on Iran as "utterly immature" and comprised of "formulations empty of all content."

Obama visited Paris in July, and the Iranian issue was at the heart of his meeting with Sarkozy. At a joint press conference afterward, Obama urged Iran to accept the West's proposal on its nuclear program, saying that Iran was creating a serious situation that endangered both Israel and the West.

According to the reports reaching Israel, Sarkozy told Obama at that meeting that if the new American president elected in November changed his country's policy toward Iran, that would be "very problematic."

Until now, the five permanent members of the UN Security Council plus Germany have tried to maintain a united front on Iran. But according to the senior Israeli source, Sarkozy fears that Obama might "arrogantly" ignore the other members of this front and open a direct dialogue with Iran without preconditions.

Following their July meeting, Sarkozy repeatedly expressed disappointment with Obama's positions on Iran, concluding that they were "not crystallized, and therefore many issues remain open," the Israeli source said. Advisors to the French president who held separate meetings with Obama's advisors came away with similar impressions and expressed similar disappointment.

There are "first" that can help a candidate, "first black", "first woman", "first POW", and there are others that can hurt.

Winning the election by raising an insane amount of money is something that does not qualify as a "positive" or convincing victory.

I'm not saying he would win thanks to money (I do not think so), but that is the point rep strategists will work on and hammer thanks to this 30 minutes crazy buy.

Republicans yet have had much trouble pushing that argument, mainly because only a couple of states really see the unfair amount of Obama's ads compared to McCain's ones. This all-out outrageous global "first" propaganda time (again, phrased as a republican) will be a fantastic opportunity to declare that Obama basically bought his election in an unprecedented Big Btrother way, which could make swing voters clearly uneasy.

Expect also all kind of comparisons, from Palin's dresses ("at least she wears them and sells them", "150k compared to tens of millions for this ad") to so-called real campaigning ("McCain does Town Hall meetings, Obama buys America") and ad hominem outrage ("It's not only a socialist, he also wears people down buy entering their homes on TV Chavez style, America does not need a leftist dictator").

All in all, I'm just saying it's more exposing Obama to retaliation now than a true opportunity to make his message heard. I expect 99% of Americans know who they will vote for, so this ad won't be watched by so many. But the aftermath and controversies will be heard by everybody.

I'm not saying people can't vote based on the message. Nor that McCain has no access to people with money. Nor that the republican argument won't be pointless.

I'm just stating that most normal people won't watch 30 minutes of Obama, normal people are fed up with the whole thing already except die hard fans and err... us. And I'm suggesting that, if used correctly by republicans, it could hurt Obama saying he's buying his presidential ticket.

I agree with you on that, it should not be McCain making the attack, but his republican supporters.

Gah... just saw the start, I'll watch it tomorrow... but the music, the sunset light, the slow zoom-in on his face, the crop field and "true americans" presentation... It's the same feeling as I had with McCain's ads on "liar" or "airdropping lawyers in alaska". It' just not right.

As much as I think that this man is the right choice, and as much as I like to look into the campaigns strategies, I cannot help but think that something has gone terribly wrong when you can sell a politician like you would sell a TV set, whoever it is.

And I realized instantly I was wrong thinking this would have no impact: elder people will watch this, and could well be influenced. It looks tailored for them.

President Clinton actually did a pretty good job. A tad amusing watching Obama during Bill's speech. Naturally, if he openly smiled at the compliments being heaped upon him, he'd be seen as arrogant. So he had to sit there attentively and try to look completely serious the whole time. It was rather amusing.

"The major networks may just wish Barack Obama took up more airtime after taking a look at the ratings for the Democratic presidential candidate's 30-minute infomercial Wednesday night.

According to preliminary ratings numbers from the networks, more than 26 million people watched the program on CBS, NBC or Fox. That's 3 million more than usually watch those networks at that hour, according to the Hollywood Reporter. Averaging in the cable networks that also carried the event, about 30 million people in all saw the long-form campaign ad.

The ad was most watched on NBC, where nearly 10 million viewers tuned in. More than 8.5 million watched on CBS while just under 8 million viewed the program on Fox. On average, about 7 million people usually tune into each network at that hour.

Overall, according to Nielsen, for the six networks that aired the infomercial simultaneously, it scored a household rating of nearly 22 percent
