Sure, "divide et impera" is good for the US. The problem is that the EU has already breached the limits for unification with the Euro currency. Now our politicans realize that unification of the EU/Euro-Zone is the last option to save the Euro curreny.
The european airline tax is a test. Born in the deepest pits of the administrative republic, the European Commission, its simple idea is to test how global industries and trade lines can be taxed. The next step will be a tobin tax, you'll see.
