Let's do a bit strat-talk...
For a small comparison: Quantam vs Example Custom

                   Quantam    Custom
Pop growth:     +25%       -30%
Income:          +30%       +50%
Research:       +70%        -30%
Attack:               0%        +50%
Magic:             -30%        -30%
Speed:           +20%       0-40%
                     Droids       Droids
Ops                  15            4-8

Quantams have better pop growth, research, more ops.
This Custom has better income right from the start, much better attack bonus.

Quantams need to build RCs as fast as possible to get research going. But it would be a waste to build them right away, more likely they'll be added as the first overbuild layer. Until that's possible several days have to pass, several more days to get a decent research percentage in... what? Income? Construction? Resources? Probably income because that's the type of building you should have built the most.

While the Quantam builds RCs, the Custom builds for the same cash plus some (higher income due to +50% income bonus) more mines and LQs, raising his income even more and perhaps already the 2nd wave of explos.

At the time the Quantams build their 2nd wave of explos, the Custom builds his first portals, first small fleets and looks greedily around what mischief he can do with his attack bonus and easy grabs...

Race design isn't everything and a good player can surely also win with a Quantam (after all Quantams aren't a bad race)  but I definetly fail to see a good Custom design and player doomed, rather on the contrary.

well, what if quantum only research construction? the bonus boost after 1st RCs come will quickly catch-up those with low research because its faster and cheaper progress, and thats the key, you do more in 1 tic than others do, and you do it faster.
Quantum is the best for infra, no doubt, then about the other skills in the game it has to be everyone's experience, not really based on race, but who'll get his HS explored and FBed first? -> a quantam  smile

thats a real advantage

If I was quantum I would be OBin with RCs on my first lot of explos (The 6 you're given), how much so? IDC cos its irrelevant to me tongue Waiting several days to start RCs would be a bad mistake. Would also be putting it into cons. When you start seeing the benefit of the savings in fleet, you will start to realise 50% income isnt the greatest when you need just as much res to build units. A quantum cuts 30% off costs is considerable amount of more fleet to vs your 50% Attack. Or they can look at building agents for ~100gc/3-4 endu a piece and nuke all your income infra... Leaves you a sitting duck basically tongue You would be spending that extra income on more Refs to match the output!

There is no real way to match the way you can play with a quantum, some just prefer a lil more of a challenge big_smile

It amazes me how many people just assume that non-quantams won't get any research. Sure 70% research is nice, but honestly its pretty much personal preferance between research and going 50% income.

Im pulling numbers out of my ass but lets say you decide to go full con up to 50% cons and then swap to full eco. By the time custom with 0% research has 50% con, a quantam has say 50% in con and 35% in eco, so the quantam gains 15% income over a custom. This doesnt take into account the better start (first 2-4 days) you get from having 50% income though, which is far too complicated to include.

The issue is the way research works, by the time the custom is at 50% econ, the quantam is probably only at 60 maybe 70% econ, as it takes more marginal points at a higher percent. So the quantam has very little edge later on in my opinion.

Couple this with the fact that research can be opped down, meaning if you get all your research killed you're better off as 50% income, and I'd say its a toss up between which is better in terms of infra.


However custom gives you the option of speed, no fear (10% attk/defence is pretty big), attack bonus, and so on which are large benefits.

TLDR; don't write off customs just yet wink

Poley that list is blah. There's people with 4-5 planets with better infra than those people. Exploring 7 planets means they spent less on infra because they spent it on infra. Plus there's even more inflated NW with pop with them. All those people who explored 7 right away are gonna be the first to die. tongue

Arby: A very strict mod, reminds me of a fat redneck who drives a truck around all day with a beer in one hand. I hated this guy at the start, however, I played a round in PW with him where he went as an anonymous player. Our fam got smashed up and everyone pretty much left. Arby stayed around and helped out the remaining family. At the end of the round he revealed himself.... My views on him have changed since. Your a good guy.....
