if you look at the past years it's hard not to notice the lowering threshold for using force in/on states who fail to prevent violence by non-state actors (Russia in Pankisi gorge, US in Afghanistan, Turkey in Kurdistan, Ethiopia in Somalia, US on Sudan and Afghanistan (under Bill clinton), US on Libya (Reagan))

but you are correct in that I'm a bit jumping the gun on it - but then again international law is an anarchic bunch of customs revolving around very few written rules

Mexican Soldiers have violated the US Border,....Im sure the US has violated Mexican border w/o Federal troops though...for sure.  US does not deploy Federal troops inside the US.  They are restricted to base.  Do not confuse National Guard w/Federal troops.


Back to topic.  If a group continues to raid into your land across the border, and uses safe harbor in a neighboring state, that STATE that safe harbors a rebel group is ALSO violating the border.

Its up to ECUADOR to secure their border as well, and not allow cross border incursions.  Im SURE ECUADOR is fully aware of what is going on w/the FARC.

Columbia is in its international right to defend itself.  If ECUADOR cannot defend/enforce the border, the COLUMBIA must do it.

Columbia to Ecuador:  Sorry, but hey, if you cannot, we must.

I think they would have their asses handed to them by Columbia.   Columbia has been fighting Terrorists and Drug lords for many years, and have some serious fighters in their ranks.  They are trained by US Green Berets (dont take that lightly, look up the mission responsibilities of the US Green Berets).

Chaves needs a bloody nose.  This may be the time for him to get it.

Hm.. everyone is in there right to defend itself, but wouldn't be more polite to say can you do it? want help? and then if Ecuador says/do nothing make a move? Colombia did violet borders, Ecuador does have the right to defend them selfs to.

Venezuela did what everyone would have done, give a sign that they can at least try to defend there country.

Besides, Hitler did evade Polonia, saying that they were defending there land from terrorist.

This term...Invasion, is very loosely used here.

I hardly call this incursion into Ecuador by Columbia, to chase rebels an invasion.

Also, Im sure, as I stated before, this did not happen out of the blue.  We dont know the Diplomatic situation.  Seems only Venezuela is flexing their muscle here.  Colombian troops are not an occupying force here.  They have left, w/no intention of staying.

He sends forces to a border that wasn't incurred by Colombia in the first place?  Ecuador is to the West of Colombia.  Venezuela is to the East.  Venezuela and Ecuador do not share a border.  This is Chavez showing support for Ecuador and FARC.  That's it.  Chavez is not stupid enough to start a war with a militarily superior Colombia and I doubt either side will do much but accuse each other of wrongdoings.

Btw, if you are willing to take the consequences, each nation has the right to invade another regardless of cause.  What prevents nations from invading each other are the foreseen consequences weighed against gain for doing so.  That is why the US will invade a smaller country like Afghanistan (foreseen consequences are not worth more as gain) and not invade a nation like South Korea (nuclear war, China protest).

You want the reasons why that wont happen in the immediate future?

1) North Korea keeps pushing to the borders of what international players will allow it....all the while planning for an attack. Their strategy for the past 50 years has been that if they get hit....they will take South Korea with them.

They have spent decades militarizing the border....they have hundreds of artillery and missile batteries already presetly aimed at South Korea's cities (mainly) and military facilities (not near as much as what is aimed at cities)

2) the nuclear threat....North has said that if they get attacked, they would most likely toss a nuclear weapon at their southern cousins

3) China apposes any economic or military sanctions as they dont want the refugees

N. Korea has a policy that all their population except the elderly and infirm are infantry at the minimum. They also have one of the largest tank forces, though those tanks are crap, in the world. Additionally the number of artillery emplacements aimed at civilians is alarming to say the least. If I was S. Korea I would raise taxes in the capital to a painful level, and make nearly no taxes in the south. This would get a lot of people to want to move south, if they could make the capital have 1/4 the population they could plan bunkers in secret in no longer occupied buildings with the taxes gathered from the time period... not so secret, as N. Korea has agents always infiltrating the south, but the show would be enough. S. Korea would no longer be hostage and N. Korea would have to grow up.
