Firstly, I don't think anyone that actually represents the dutch team will claim spain did not deserve to win.

And then, there is a difference between rough play, and breaking rules. Obviously the dutch took it too far in this match, nerves and inexperience had a role in that. Sure the dutch played rough, they were punished for it, that's how that goes. Does not mean Spain should be getting illegitimate goals. (in hindseight the goal wasn't offside, but it seemed to be at the time). It also does not mean the referee should give a goalkick while it was clearly a corner. Two wrongs do not make a right.

LOL van persie should have had a red card too? for what? not participating in anything?

i am still convinced de jong did not intend to hit alonso with his leg. if you know de jong a little bit, you'll know that coordination is not quite his strong suit.
look at this
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pMEgKQ4wEKw

caceres is nowhere near the ball, but that does not mean he should have gotten a red card. (interestingly he didn't even get a yellow card for this).

and i don't seem to hear anyone about iniesta kicking van bommel while the ball is on the other side of the pitch, i don't seem to hear anyone about the countless dives the spanish took (not saying the dutch, especially robben didn't, but still). I think it goes way too far to just blame the dutch for the way the match went.

As for BBC's credibility on this...they gave Howard Webb an 8 out of 10 for his perfomance in this match, what kind of drugs was that journalist on...

i'll tell you this much

de jong wasn't chosen because of his awesome footballing skill
he doesn't have that.
he was chosen because he's able to disrupt play and get under other people's skin. pretty much every team has a player like that, although i'm not sure i like that.

just some examples, barcelona, generally accepted as the best team in the world, had yaya toure last season. he was there to work, and to take opponents out.
real madrid has lassie diarra
inter milan has 8 of them.
chelsea has a bunch of them.

they are an essential part of the game.

I'm all but convinced it was an intended kick on the player.

If anything that movie Chris posted shows that he is going towards the ball with his foot (especially from the first angle)

As I was just stating, Chris, is that the only direct red card that should have been given in this match, was the one Iniesta should have gotten for kicking van Bommel.

(Ofcourse it needs to be said that van Bommel should have had his 2nd yellow card well before that)

SD is right, there's nothing wrong with having a stretched leg, as long as you hit the ball, not the player.

And today I have actually started to doubt if De Jong's charge should have been a red card. If you look at it, it's dangerous play, so yes, a free kick, and yes, possibly a yellow card, but it wasn't intended so no red.
It's not more or less severe than Caceres' overhead kick into De Zeeuw's face in the semi-final, I didn't hear anyone say it should have been a red card then.

I didn't mean specifically this tournament, I just think it's about time the referees start acting according to the rules, and not randomly do something.

You know what is bugging me most about referees these days...

the fact they do not pay attention to the simplest rules anymore.

- Diving - Diving is, when classed as such, always a yellow card. When is the last time you saw a ref give a yellow card for it? I haven't in ages.

- Argueing with the ref, and requesting yellow cards for other players - This is always a yellow card, but it never happens.

- Throw ins - Throw ins are supposed to be done from the neck, and the ball is supposed to be going up, before going down again, in an arch like motion. Over half the throw in in this tournament were wrongfully executed.

Goalkeepers - Look at the amount of goalkeepers that take one or two steps out of the penalty area before kicking the ball upfield, this is hands! Yellow card, and free kick.

There are so many more of these things referees just do not pay attention to anymore these days, and people abuse it more and more.

Other than that I really really really think players should be able to get banned for diving afterwards, if it can be proven by recorded footage. It's the only way to ban this cancerous form of cheating from the game.

another thing is that the high amount of fouls on the dutch side may have something to do with not being experienced with playing at this level.

a high number of players in the dutch team does not play champions league, that's quite different in the spanish team.

i think the honour guard thing the dutch team did says enough.

oh and i just saw the replay, the goal was not offside.

the reason mathijssen was so upset is that sneijder's freekick was blocked by the spanish wall, and instead of a corner, the ref gave a goalkick, in the counter attack spain scores.

they really didn't, avo.

i agree that some of the fouls were over the line (well, really just de jong) but refereeing has everything to do with that as well.

it wasn't the best match, but finals never are.
spain won, i can live with that, in the end they were the better team, they have the better players.

i do think holland deserves a whole lot of respect, if you take into consideration that holland is such a small country, and our national competition is nothing compared to most of the other western european leagues. i think reaching the final is a maginificent result.

that is true, de jong is an absolute moron, that guy has no brain, i don't understand why he's even in the team.

worst

referee

ever.

i have to admit that in the end i can live with spain having won the match, considering they were trying to be the more offensive team.
however, that referee was way out of control, rediculous yellow cards, spanish players constantly diving, and asking for cards (which is a yellow card offense, no yellow card was ever given).

Congratulations to spain, but this match will always have a bitter taste to it.
What a complete retard.
