"Republicans passed the 14th amendment so that black slaves could become citizens. A Republican issued the Emancipation Declaration. Democrats created, and only Democrats were allowed to join the KKK. Seems kind of obvious who the racists are."
That is a simplification.  The democratic party at the time can't be compared with the party now. Both parties have their own racists.

"Palin is to the Republican party as Obama is to the Democratic party: Great at fundraising but dumber than shit."
Lol, I agree with that 100%.

I think we should slowly start to dismantle religion in europe. It is largely unfair that the majority of us should pay for some old farts who still want to go to church. I admit, they were more or less brainwashed to believe and they can't help it but still. You can preserve the buildings but for me that's all.

In any case, there are to few priest or followers anyway so it will come to an end sooner or later. Also note how they don't scare kids anymore with stories of heaven and hell.

I would vote for both atheists and non atheists. It depends on what I think that person will do with his power.

lol,

to my shame I never heard about it before. Looked it up in Wikipedia. What is the reason you speak it? Are your parents from the Philippines?

@east:
continue with German and Chinese. Some villages in the US speak Chinese for centuries. In some of them, only one guy know how to speak/write English to fill in the papers.

"Asking what European languages are and pointing out that some are widespread completely misses the point."
No it does not. It partly explains why europeans don't know much languages that does not also occur in EU borders. This is relevant for his statement -also in the initial post- that europeans don't know languages not from the EU.

"The initial post inquired about Europeans here and the languages they speak."
We know.

"That Dutch is also spoken in X, Y, and Z former colonies has nothing to do with it."
I have the same reaction as above.

"And asking for clarification of what is a European language, off-topic as it is, is additionally ridiculous."
No it is not. It is a question for clarifying his initial statement, and a way to point something out.

"So now you know what I meant, as well as that it was figurative"
I got the picture. My English is maybe the worse of all forum posters here, but not that bad.

my point exactly wfs

@avo:
the point was to see how many europeans spoke non-European languages.
how can forum posters of politics in IC be representative? Most -I am an exception- know very good English to start with. The group is narrow and there are only a few people inside it.

"I am not going to bother trying to create a definition for European language that is bullshit proof; everyone should know what is meant."
But his argument still stands, some European languages are widespread. So maybe clarify what it is you want to prove or investigate?

lol@avo, idd

@all:
it depends on what definition of religion you use. And believe it or not, you can always choose what definition you use. Whatever dictionary you can give an example of, isn't written by God. And as an atheist that's easy to say for me. big_smile

So if you're definition is a religion is a believe in a higher magical power of some kind, a lot of atheist would be non religious. If your definition is simply "your religion is what you believe", then all atheist are idd religious. Its a childish discussion really. What matters is we all understand what the other person means. This can happen by standards or by simple agreements.

i.m.o. America was a superpower in WW1. Not the same as later on but it was at least economically speaking a superpower. Many people underestimate the importance of economy.

For al other things, I think it is largely unpredictable. One thing that passed my mind is, if you lived at that time, you could impossibly have guessed the future. Even if you were very educated, you wouldn't have guessed the way nazi's bring down France so fast. Not even after how they finished off Poland. Unless you had extensive knowledge of the German army and there new tactics and even then.

I speak:
dutch (native)
French
Chinese (mandarin)

and a little
english
German

and a very little:
Spanish

I understand:
a little of the scandinavian languages except for finish

This makes it possible for me to communicate with a lot of people in there native language and most people in there second.

my opinion about it:
For me its ok if the world gradually started to speak English. I consider that a good thing. I would remove some inconsistencies and exceptions though.

@avo:
So you start of with saying "some europeans" you heared consider Americans ignorant for some reason. Why would it even bother us? It is not representative for all europeans who consider of many individuals with different meanings you can't know even with polls.

I personally do not consider Americans ignorant as whole or anything like that and surely won't put languages as an argument.

edit: I put german in the "little" group altough I understand it rather well
