That's repulsive. But it has little to do with abortions, imo..

"Over here abortion is allowed up until the baby is fully out of the vagina.
Difference much?"

If your morals stand in the way of a proper, open discussion, then the discussion is over...

"well, maybe the end products wouldnt be human to get around that.... designing the baby to lack a heart, and need a mechanical one, making it miss the definition of human; and then slaves dont need to be good thinkers, technology could probably create a computer to replace their brain, which would also negate the need to educate them and then the entire world could have an army of subhuman slaves derived from embryos.  or simply modifying the dna just enough not fit what falls for human dna.. "

If the technology's there, then we'd have to deal with such ethical problems. But it this time, it's way too hypothetical tongue
Over here abortion is allowed to the 11th week of pregnancy, and to the 14th week if the embryo is burdened with a severe genetic disorder.

I don't object to embryo manipulation. It can provide a lot of biological information we can hardly access otherwise. Although, when it's intended to become an actual person (we've surpassed the abortion issue here), the genome must only be manipulated for medical reasons.

You're assuming that "killing" an embryo is worse than modifying it, and that I'd therefore tolerate it. But that's a whole different matter.

"Actually your wrong."

Oh, sweet irony!

Flint, I don't think this is more upsetting than the race struggle of the 50's. The rage will pass..

"Nemeara was saying that it could be possible to make someone with no memory, no emotions, and a perfect body. Your not disagreeing huh?"

I wasn't agreeing either. You seem to question my morality, and thus I must conclude we're not having a discussion on the mutual respect I thought we were having..
I thought that genetically engineered humans without thoughts, memory etc. would fall under those whose future is set and limited by the genetical changes.

Didn't Obama sign some sort of thing that would block refunds for abortions?

"where is the scientific basis for defining a living being as something with a brain?  also, fetus's do have brains, thoughts, feelings, ect. nazi's chose not to recognize jews as humans... japanese chose not to consider Chinese as humans and genocide occured. the only difference between supporters of abortion and supporters of past genocide is that its the present so you made different criteria thats convenient for you in the present on what makes things human beings. "

I claim Godwin's law!
But besides that, your argument is besides the question as there seems to be quite a consensus that jews can think and show brain activity. It's not a matter of chosing one qualification and toss the rest away.

"another scenario... people are already manipulating embryonic cells to grow certain organs... it will only be a matter of time before we can genetically engineer people... if the embryo doesnt have the rights a human has, then doctors will eventually be able to genetically engineer sex slaves, or coal miners or even geneticially engineer all future babies to have certain political ideology when they mature... ah, just think how much freedom democracy will provide when the masses are engineered at conception to consider certain parties best..."

It's impossible to grow a particular human organ at this moment, but if it's possible: why the hell not? You'll be regenerating from a certain condition out of your body. A stem cell is not an embryo.
Genitally engineered babies are, to a certain degree, not really a problem either, imo. Although, it must be added that manipulations, apart those made for medical reasons, should not determine the child's future.

Aren't most businesses the ones who pay the health insurance of their employees? I assume they pay more for homosexuals due to the fact they're more likely to contract an STD. At the same time, they also have the higher risk of those employees to call in sick because of that. Thus private compagnies have similar "extra costs" as it were.
And if a compagny is allowed to fire an employee on the sole basis of that person being gay, Obama has quite some work left to do tongue

You'll find that a "load of cock" means "bullshit" in England, I thought it was a common expression.

There's no quick and easy fix in this matter. The arbitrary case-to-case approach is exactly the upside of it.

Chris, I didn't even know who Stupack was till a few minutes ago. All I tried to say was Flint's rant about him dealing with harassment was hypocrite.
I haven't bashed the Greeks for failing in their economy. But on that matter, I think it should be resolved on a European basis. The Irish got massive support for years on end, I don't see why we shouldn't step in with the Greeks. European support in return for an increased battle against corruption and perhaps some economical reforms (when needed) would do..

988

(45 replies, posted in Politics)

That system isn't any different flint, it just ignores them and demands them to shut up. If it isn't a problem now, I don't see how it'd be a problem when they're allowed to talk about it..
As for costs, I'm sure your gay troopers would happily pay for their own condoms if they're allowed to stay in the military.

What that moron said though is a different thing. He claimed that gay people shouldn't be allowed in the military as a whole as they're poor soldiers, according to him. He doesn't even back the current policy of the military, he's just plain homophobic.
After all, all the arguments of extra costs and extra chances to get an STD and such apply to any business. But they're not allowed to kick employees out if they're found out to be homosexuals, are they? The sole reason that remains is that the army is opposing it out of homo-stereotypes and/or homophobia...

"if I pop bald eagle eggs in a microwave and put it on youtube, the "eagle DNA dont make it an eagle YET" argument won't save me from federal  prison"

If you do that, you'd have to steal the eggs. It's not that the "parents" involved had anything to say in it. That's the where you seem to miss the ball.
Although, American soldiers didn't seem to bother to throw puppies of cliffs, so what's stopping you? tongue

"finally, even though some people dont consider human embryos as human beings... doesnt justify killing them.  if we cant objectively say when a human being is a human being; why would we be justified to kill a group that might be human beings? If theres a group of individuals that considered another group of individuals as not qualifying as a group of human beings... would you support the genocide of the race of individuals that a group of individuals dont consider human beings?"

You seem to miss the point entirely. An embryo is nothing more but a patch of cells that are evolving into a human being. If the parents (or girl, ultimatly the decision lies with her) decide to opt for an abortion, they chose to not recognise it as a living being. Where this differs from a genocide is that an embryo has no brain and thus no thoughts, no feelings, no personality or anything else. If *the people involved* don't consider it to be a person, then it isn't. The world couldn't have less to say in this.
If you consider that to be murder, than exterminating vermin defenatly is.

"and WFS ignores the entire argument afterwards also."

No, you fail to concentrate on the main facts of my first post, wich is about gays supposedly performing less than a straight soldier to a degree it kept them from preventing a genocide. Or at least that was that moron Sheehan's opinion.

I'm not a liberal Justinian.

"Western forces are effective as they are, and the cost of public discontent is not worth the benefits gays can offer. Come up with a pragmatic argument that is worth the public discontent, military discontent, and administrative costs etc or stfu. The world has no place for social justice."

Glad we can agree on that. Gay people are part of that same force, but they're not allowed to talk about it. I don't see how being able to take part of it but not being allowed to tell even strengthens the military force. As I have said before (but this seems to have gone unnoticed) I believe it'd even benefit a platoon's cohesion if the gay part of it is allowed to express them fully.

"You are mistaken about the generousity of mankind."

The first steps of our healthcare were formed by 19th century unions, wich are not to be confused with your present day mafia infested unions. So it is/was possible.

"However, a true capitalistic health care would bring prices down as everyone would be in it for themselves.
Regardless, 100 companies competing against each other would result in prices plummeting, as new efficiencies were created, as new idea's that WORK rise to the top, and as they try to undercut each other for market share."

It would bring prices down, indeed. But it would also exploit every single hole in whatever lawbook to get out of paying people.

Coming from a person who threatened to commit suicide when he was harassed by some people, this sounds rather hypocrite. You can't expect us to take this serious..

Congratulations! Obama will be venerated for this by coming generations.

"A fetus is a human being. It has a human genotype that is developing according to those instructions. Any other definition of human is going to be arbitrary."

Carrying the DNA of a homo sapiens doesn't qualify for being a human being. A wart has human DNA, for that matter.. An organism becomes a human being when people want it to be. Some people see it as a human being as soon as they find out they might be pregnant, while others only consider it to be human when it's visible on a echography. In the late 18th century, one wasn't even considered to be a real person (although a human being) till the age of 12!
I don't think it's up to the state to limit people in abortion, as it's a personal thing. The state, however has to distinguish abortion from murder, but that is a whole different discussion.

"I also do not see a problem with universal health care. Some European countries have very efficient systems, and the complaints about long lines in the US etc are pure propaganda. However, while the US is in need of health care reform, this bill is just not satisfactory for me. It still satisfies the greedy insurance and pharmaceutical companies who deserve to be broken up."

True that, but his governmental policy, that was supposed to bring the prices of a private insurance down was shot down. It's a step in the right direction though.
In my opinion, I don't even understand why health care is in the hands of private - money making - compagnies, as they're not in it for the sake of mankind. A non profit organisation or the government (I know americans dread it) would make a far logical choice. Isn't the latter not there to serve its people the best it can?

Still waiting for a proper counter argument here lads. Flint just ignores my and others arguments and Avogadro is just jabbering on about that deduction.

"the premises are comparable...
premise 1 of both are recognizing that a group can be good soldiers
premise 2 is the same for both.
conclusions for both is that because the groups are recognized as good soldiers, and that good soldiers are kept in the army, then they should be allowed in the army."

Again, the deduction was a illustration, cause you claimed there was no logic in my reasoning in the first place. But if you want to go on about it, your deduction has a third premise about communication, wich makes it completely different from mine.

996

(45 replies, posted in Politics)

Yet you fail to do so. I told you it was silly, but it does show how my reasoning works. I have yet to read a decent argument that proves or even claims gay soldiers are by definition worse soldiers than straight ones.
Your deduction, for what it's worth, doesn't even mimick mine, as it assumes a premise it's not even there in mine.

"I would consult biology.
Lets see, heart beat, consumes food, ejects fecal matter... seems it is a living being to me.
That is what you call a SLAM DUNK"

You see to be confusing a "living being" with "life". For that matter, it doesn't even need to have a cardiovascular system..
SLAM FAIL!
The consequence of this is immense in this matter. In my opinion the embryo's rights don't outweigh the mother's rights. It's little or no different of an animal embryo till after a number of weeks, is it a human being then? No, only when you want it to be one.

998

(45 replies, posted in Politics)

"no, im saying any reasonable millitary official would want to ensure maximum cohesion.."

That wasn't part of your premises, as far as your deduction matters.
You assume that cohension is essential in the military, and I agree. But I don't see how openess about homosexuality would deteriorate cohesion. In fact, I think it'll improve it. As some gay soldiers are now forced to remain silent about it, they feel alienated...
About the native tongues debate, the French Foreign Legion does pretty well smile

"WFS.. It is a mental disorder. The previous leading activists for gays in the United States... they turned hetero and admitted it was a mental disorder that was infecting their lives."

Not a single sane psychologist would dare to claim it's a mental disorder. People just don't "turn" into a different sexuality either.. Claiming that is just psychological nonsense.

"There is a sound reason to keep gays out. STD transmissions. Since stress relief is sometimes taken as sex, this would increase the medical load in combat if gay troops were allowed.
There is ample evidence, due to common blooding of the anus, that gay men transmit STD's extremely well."

Ever heard that STD's are passed on between heterosexuals too? I assume you have women in your armies too (ah yes, Private England, whe was one!), so that's rather silly. It's true that STD's pass on faster among gay men, but protection is the key here! I'm sure one of the world's best armies can ask that of its soldiers..
Still, arevage percentages of homosexuality are between 10% and 15%. I'm sure it's even less in the army (however, we have no clue due to the same lack of research and openness!). Assuming you have regular medical checkups, I don't think that's a problem.
Oh also, weren't STD's a great problem in past wars anyway (like Vietnam)? Armies always encourage prostitution, and that always brings an increased chance of STD spreadage.

"I have defeated your argument this easily"

You haven't! There's still not a single argument that backs his cuckoo opinion about the Srebrenica massacre.
