It's a thing a few friends of mine are doing, and it's quite fun. For what it's worth:

And I shall now evoke utter repugnance by showing you my result:

I played wasteland I think. I wonder how they're going to transfer it to this age. I mean "top-down" and "turn-based" aren't really the best keywords in the gaming industry at this time..

AMD will continue to make x86 processors, but they're gaining a large share in the market that aims for products with a good energy economy. Their APU's seem to have quite an edge over Intel's, not in the least when it comes down to graphics. ARM is, by design, better at energy economy than a x86 processor, so it's quite normal they start to produce ARM processors as well.
It's true that they admitted they can not keep up with Intel in the high end segment of the market, but that doesn't mean they'll abandon the x86 in total..

The gain of the intel processor is marginal, and it defenatly isn't worth the extre cash. If you want to give your computer a speedboost with "couple dozen/100 $" as East suggests, you're far better off with a good SSD. That's the true bottleneck right there..

"A: Empirically deny your claim that nationalism automatically equates to unquestioning obedience."

I never claimed such a thing.

"B: Indicate that individuals can hold nationalist-style support for an abstract concept of nationhood, even if that nation does not exist at this time?"

I think my point doesn't really come through here. Any form of nationalism in daily practice feeds the idea that ththe object is real and true. I think that's a very powerful tool.
Letting children take the pledge of allegiance is very similar to making children pray. In later life they might denounce the practice and even the entity that's being honoured, but at the same time the basic idea has intrinsicly made part of that person. Not every person is a believer, but everyone prays in a way.

The french revolution is a very good case on this. The royal line had estiblished itself rather strongly and managed to create a true unity in its kingdom in spite of the French nobility (this goes back to the 100 year's war). When the French got rid of their dynasty, the idea of France splitting up was never raised, even though most people didn't speak french as it was known at all. Most of them spoke Occitan, Breton, Flemish, German Piccardian and so on.

All I'm saying is that nationalism creates an idea of a higher identity/belonging, wich is of course a mostly artificial identity. But apparently, it's a strong and potentially dangerous idea. My point is that the fact the discussion in the other thread (about killing for your country) exists, proves exactly that.

"Nationalism Euro style sucks, American style rules."

Great argument there.

It's not the words of the pledge, but the ritual itself. It's indoctrinating. And of course, a bit of nationalism doesn't do any harm. But what it does, is putting the ligitimacy of a country/government beyong questioning. I think that people should always question their governmental structure and even the state/country they live in. Perhaps this is Belgian pragmaticism bleeding through, but I don't think we should just accept we live in this or that country/state/governmental structure because it was decided like that a few centuries ago. And that's the danger of nationalism, especially when it has become a daily routine.

Let's not make this a global warming thread!

Why a daily pledge of allegiance? Isn't that something more suiting for a dictatorial regime?

So, basicly, you want your government to deal with economic globalisation (foreign competitors having unfair advantages)? That's very unlike the laissez-faire economy you defended before. Yes, the Mexicans do the same job for less money. If their government wants to subsidize their transportsector, that's their job. In the laissez-faire economy, that's just the fittest competitor winning. That's pretty much the same as GM a few years back. But you opposed governmental support then, no?

I agree with you though. Your transport sector needs to be backed up by your government.

There's a whole lot more I lol'ed at. Lashings for criminals? Scientists who believe in global warming/climate shift being put to jail? Welfare abolished? Unions made illegal? Daily pledge of allegiance?

I think Flint would find Fascist Italy quite a pleasant regime!

I can't believe I'm actually doing this..

things I agree with:
*****************
- I dream of unlimited competition and safeguards against even partial monopolies, so that prices are as low as they can go.
- I dream of a patent system where patents cannot be vague and cover huge scopes, where companies cannot abuse the system.
- I dream of a time when unemployment is 1% and when jobs out number applicants.
- I dream of a time when traffic laws are more concerned with safety than speeds (Golden Rule).
- I dream of a a Constitutional Amendment supporting privacy rights, including from data collection servicss.

things I disagree with:
*******************
- I dream of criminals receiving punishments such as lashings, work details, and other punishments befitting their crime in lieu of jail time. <- wtf?
- I dream of a time when no one listens to environmental extremists and production of nuclear power grows 100 fold in the United States.
- I dream of of a time when profiteers who claimed Global Warming is real are put in jail for 20 years as well as are given physical punishments annually as a way to discourage falsifying science in a manner that affects all of society.
- I dream of a time when in a divorce the one filing gets 25% of the family possessions and loses custody of any children and pets (unless they can prove a domestic crime or danger).
- I dream of a time whrn schools teach ethics and laws and not liberal ideals.
- I dream of a time when gays and lesbians respect marriage and choose a title that differs.
- I dream of a time when illegal aliens find no place to work and no government benefits.
- I dream of a time when welfare is seen as a swear word, and is abolished.
- I dream of a time where Unions are not allowed to collectively bargain over pay or benefits.
- I dream of a time when a Balanced Budget Amendment exists.
- I dream of a Conservative supermajority in the House and Senate, SCOTUS, and the White House.
- I dream that Planned Parenthood survive on its own means or declares bankruptcy.
- I dream of a time when reverse racism and racism are fully considered the same.
- I dream of a time when drug dealers are treated so harshly no one will deal drugs (same with transporters of large quantities of drugs and manufactorers) <- there's a need for a new approach
- I dream of a time when no subsidies exist.
- I dream of a Flat Tax or a Fair Tax.
- I dream of respect for Christianity and Judaism. <- what's wrong with all the rest?
- I dream of an end of the Animal Rights movement. They are not human, they are not intelligent, they are animals.
- I dream that teachers get paid with how knowledgabke their students get from them. <- great social environment makes great students.
- I dream that all activist judges get impeached.
- I dream the property tax, the death tax, and any similar taxes be abolished.
- I dream of the closing of many government agencies.
- I dream of a return of Senators being chosen by the States and not the people.
- I dream of a proper Missile Shield.
- I dream of the Pledge of Alliegence being said daily in every classroom.

things I have no opinion about:
**************************
- I dream of a time when the Federal Government stops giving States money and makes them get the money themselves.
- I dream of Federal lands being sold to pay down our debt.
- I dream of a time when copyright theft is seen as copyright theft and those tired of certain music and movie groups asking for to much money form their own group with the hundreds, thousands, or even millions of other frustrated people which will have more fair pricing (in their view). <- honestly, I don't get what you're saying
- I dream of oil wells and refineries until prices are at minimum dropped to $2 a gallon. <- but this hinders the search for alternatives: need = opportunity
- I dream of a time when equal opportunity in no way means equal outcome. <- no idea what you mean with that.
- I dream of a time when pork barrel projects are outlawed. <- no idea what you mean with that.
- I dream of a time when raw food activists can purchase across State lines.
- I dream of a secure South Border.
- I dream of the Constitution being fully respected as written by the Founders and not of revisionist views.
- I dream of a Constitutional Amendment preventing Receess Appointments but also requiring Congress vote yes or no in two months of a person being appointed by the President (also bans Czars and any perspn not authorized by Congress).
- I dream that Tenure is abolished. <- no idea what you mean with that.

things I don't care a money's testicle about:
************************************
- I dream of regulations that can fit in a magazine and read "Do not lie, cheat, or steal" and "You will not endanger the health of others" and the likes.
- I dream for an Interstate concealed weapons pact covering all 50 States. <- seems reasonable that it's the same everywhere: arms are forbidden.

Now there's a list of things I disagree with, and some of wich I agree.. And that said, it's all you can say about your post. How do you expect to get a discussion going with this? Your post deals with topics that are so varied  that one can only agree or disagree. It looks more like a political speech echoing in an empty room (you won't find many voters in here!)..

I looked into the forums and saw I was removed from the fmod team. I wonder why, really. I know I'm not at all active, but I'm not unreachable either. I've been visiting these forums once in a while. At least you could have asked me to quit, rather than just remove me from the team. After 5 years of fmodding, I think I deserved at least that..

There goes the chance of ending it properly. This is an absolute disgrace.
