if you hit the numlock key by accident it could explain when it starts typing numbers.

How old is the laptop? the delay when typing is typical of older laptops and laptops that may have too little ram for all that they are doing. If you're using Vista and have under 2GBs of ram i could see it happening. For XP you'd have to be down in the 512MB or lower to really make that happen.
