I just watched the movie, and I'm not going to bother to sum up all the things that are historicly incorrect tongue It gives you a different angle of things, but that's it (and I'm an atheist)..

"If you want to be taken seriously, never get info from wikipedia."

At uni they encourage us to use wiki, but only as a starting aid; to have some information before you actually start to get scientific literature..

Right, "bowing for monarchies" is rarely the case in European history. Apart from several exceptions like Louis XIV of France and Philip of Spain and his father Emperor Charles V, the whole of Europe had representative organs from the 11th - 12th century on. These organs had undeniable power, based on money. Besides the Royal rights, the prince had to ask these bodies for money, who in return asked several rights.
When the prince sought to get around these bodies, you get uprisings like the Glorious Revolution, The 80-years war of the Netherlands etc. Revolts like that were hardly ever in favour of the prince.
According to Koenigsberger: republicanism was invented when princes started to hold more then 1 "dominium", and had to  rely on the representative bodies of them to govern efficiently..

On a sidenote: I'd like to add that the American declaration of independence and the bill of rights are heavily based on the one consituted by the Netherlands in the 16th-17th century. Merely to point out that not all countries in Europe were monarchies

Nah, war's just always good for the economy. The oil was probably the triggering (great) bonus wink

"less than three hundred years ago, you were all bowing to monarches, and tossing shit out the window into the streets as well."

False arguement, America's ancestors too wink

I'll get back on that "bowing to monarchies" bit later on..

"Ok the whole Bart pursued on the bayou by excon is lifted from this color film, 1989 Cape Fear by Martin Scorcese. But Scorcese made DeNiro's psycho a born-again preacher with Love and Hate tatooed on his hands. This faked out even Michael Medved who thought Scorcese was being a jerk about religion. Its actually an homage to the eerie Robert Mitchum thriller "night of the hunter" where a bluebeard posing as a preacher with similar tatoos pursues children through the 1930s south. And it's Mitchum's hands shown in the entry above, though Sideshow Bob was mimicking Deniro all the way."

That doesn't make any sense. Scorcese made the coloured version..

"Thats because America knows how to fight.
We value human life....unlike you barbarians in Europe."

Says the man from the only country that succesfully committed a genocide and isn't ashamed of what it has done (idolising it in Western stories etc.) tongue

"Just see it as America is 300 years backwards of Europe, we had colonies 300 years ago for natural resourches and slaves, same goes for the US now, they have a colony called Iraq, wich they have for the natural resourches. They are not loved in Iraq anymore then the Euro's were loved in their colonies."

The great colonisation is only from the 19th century, CrazyOne.

"Why are Continental Europeans so.... pretetious and ridiculous?"

I must agree with fokker. Americans come across the very same way..
But I'm going with a great historian on this matter, namely Stearns. He sees it as as a reaction on the post-cold war situation, among with tendencies like regionalism etc. When the "2nd world" fell apart in 1989, people in Europe (in other regions as well, though) didn't feel the need for a strong Western Unity anymore, while other regions (mostly in East Europe) sought a national identity. Both situations resulted in a renewed regionalism (Flanders in Belgium, Scotland and Wales in the UK, Catalonia in Spain etc).. He claims that "westernisation" is now considered "americanisation", and that people react to that..

And, since WWII, Europe has changed. In the chock of the first half of the century, so terrible atrocities had happened, that Europe sought for new paths to settle conflicts. The EU started to grow, and Europe now favours diplomacy and other means rather then brute force. I think a superficial comparison with Sparta and Athens is in place. Athens, diplomatic and peace-loving being Europe; Sparta, a military state being the USA; sharing the same culture..

This is just plain stupidity... Nothing more nothing less..

What's more worrying is the polls included in the article. 15% of the people think they should be allowed to refuse mediacal treatment for religious reasons, while 68% believes a prayer does help a sick person....
