i think ppl confuzzle prayers helping and prayers curing, as in curing on their own.
having said that, those things said in the polls really dont point out anything :s  (what is considered praying, what is considered helping??)

there have been studies (link meh:P?) pointing out ppl with positive attitudes tend to heal faster / cope better with disease/illness,
and religion is on of the things/mechanism/ whatever to provide ppl with a positive attitude,
and praying is often part of religion.

ppl also tend to feel better if they feel they are not forgotten or isolated, in that respect, hearing ppl will be praying for you (thinking of you ), might help stay positive as well

religious restrictions are often based no situations, findings, thoughts that might not be accurate or uptodate enough anymore, ppl should be able to reason about that, especially when someone's life is in danger. it s too damn easy to just say, well it is her/his time or god will prvide the miracle, mebbe the miracle lies in having the meds there already..
