I was aiming more at proper medieval cities Justinian like Ghent, Bruges etc. wink They all started out as perfect democracies (Florence and Venice in fact too), but were changed into oligarchies in wich only a minority could vote.

Russia is a stage-democracy. Every inhabitant knows it's not, but they keep pretending it is..
It's very similar to most old medieval city democracies really (however that tradition were easily discontinued for a while when a riot started) tongue

"Palin was the governor of the largest state in the union."

Yes, and also thecalmest one. Size doesn't matter. Besides, being governor seems to be a rather easy job, if even a the intellectual equivalent of antimatter Swarzenegger can be a governator for longer than one term..

Then again, Brussels is the European hotspot of the 21st century, while california is just another attraction pole competing against other cities in a country that's suffering heavily from an economic crisis.

Oh, indeed. I love Brussels.. The "Vossenplein" with its fleamarket, the grand place, the music shops on the Anspach, the St. Hubertgallery, the cathedral.. It's odd that few Belgians actually go there regularly and really know the city. But, I'm guessing that's only true for the Flemish..
